Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Will it hurt?
A: Everybody has a different perception and sensitivity to external stimuli. Ms. Datillo has children in her practice who actually laugh when she places a needle, and she has grown adults who can’t tolerate the needles at all.
Q: What if I have to go to the bathroom during a treatment?
A: We have a bell! A small bell is placed within easy reach of each patient during treatment. You may call for assistance or to take a break at any moment.
Q: What do you use for non-needle techniques?
A: Magnets, with or without electro-stimulation (feels like tapping), cold low-level laser (feels like a laser pointer or a grocery scanner on your hand)—used to stimulate acupuncture points.
Q: What should I expect during my first treatment?
A: Lots of questions, a medical intake that is detailed—that details areas in your life you have never experienced, such as what is your energy level, review of any medical records you may bring with you, Q&A, introduction to all treatment modalities, interpretation of these, in combination; palpatory diagnostics; abdominal diagnosis, feeling of points, release trigger points, etc. Cold laser treatment first then acupuncture, … about 90 minutes, patients lie on a table mostly fully clothed with a blanket, heat lamp, bell, and eye mask, which results in total relaxation. You might even sleep. Quiet music; openness to any issue you may want to discuss.
Q: How long is a treatment?
A: An initial consultation includes a first treatment, so appointments usually last 90 minutes.
Q: How often will I need a treatment?
A: Together, Ms. Datillo works with patients to determine what the best timing schedule would be for them. Her goal is always to alleviate symptoms/problems as quickly as possible.
Q: When can I expect results?
A: Some feel nothing, some feel better, some feel worsening of symptoms after the first treatment. We look at it that any change is positive. We evaluate together after 4 treatments and determine whether or not acupuncture treatment is helping you or not. If necessary, we can refer you to an MD, physical therapy, etc.
Q: What level of privacy is offered?
A: The clinic is a discreet, caring environment. Any personal issues are kept confidential between Ms. Datillo and patient. Often her staff does not know the reason why a patient is seeking treatment.
Q: What is your confidentiality policy?
A: We abide by all HIPPA standards of privacy.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is a federal law protecting individual rights "over your health information and sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive your health information" (
http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/consumers/index.html).
"The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically. The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. The Rule also gives patients rights over their health information, including rights to examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections" (

Q: Are there any side effects?
A: No. If acupuncture is not performed correctly, there are potential technique-oriented side-effects rather than other effects; however, Ms. Datillo is an accomplished practioner of long standing.
Q: How will it effect my normal activities after an appointment?
A: Sometimes people feel very relaxed or tired and will want to take the evening slowly. It may take a couple of hours for some individuals to get their energy back. Patients should eat before treatment and later go about their daily business as usual.
Q: What are the costs?
A: Depending on the service, costs vary. We often run specials. Call and request our latest special. You may also want to view our News & Specials page.
Q: I have fears about doing this for the first time. What if I do not want to continue during a treatment?
A: You are in control; you can leave if you need to or want to. Everyone is different, and we support you at all times. You may discontinue your treatment or take a break.
Q: Is your clinic accessible?
A: Yes, we are located on the ground floor with a level entrance and halls wide enough to accommodate assistive machines and devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, etc. If you need a guide for your first visit we will be happy to meet you at the door. Assistive animals are permitted according to state law. And they can be treated, too! See below for our policy regarding assistive animals.
Essential Energetics Clinic welcomes assistive animals and asks that those with allergies or other concerns regarding assistive animals contact the office prior to arrival. Appropriate accommodations shall be made for all.
Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 272, Section 98A (Physically handicapped persons with guide dogs; public places or conveyances; charges or fares; penalties) provides for the presence of assistive animals in public places (including places of business) without restriction or penalty.
Text of the law relevant to the Clinic is excerpted as follows:
“…any blind person, or deaf or hearing handicapped person, or other physically handicapped person accompanied by a dog guide, shall be entitled to any and all accommodations, advantages, facilities, and privileges of all public conveyances, public amusements, and places of public accommodation, within the commonwealth, to which persons not accompanied by dogs are entitled, subject only to the conditions and limitations applicable to all persons not accompanied by dogs….”
